Eberhard’s Story on Severe COPD/Emphysema
Eberhard’s Journey:
Eberhard Jordan, a visual artist and COPD activist, shares his experience with severe COPD/emphysema and how valve therapy changed his life. From struggling with daily activities to setting new challenges like climbing the DC Tower, Vienna’s highest building.
“When I think back to the time before I got the valves and could barely walk up two floors to my flat, what I’m doing now is a small miracle and has a ‘wow’ effect on me.”
– Eberhard Jordan.
Procedure Details:
Age at Treatment: 54
Hospital: Vienna, Austria
Date of Procedure: 2016
Life Before Zephyr® Endobronchial Valves:
“I could hardly climb steps anymore, let alone keep up or walk with anyone. Extreme shortness of breath when carrying the shopping. When I got upset, I could hardly breathe. Those were the everyday complaints.” – Eberhard Jordan.
Life After Zephyr Endobronchial Valves:
“Everyday activities become easier because you feel safer, because you have greater reserves in your lungs. You can also exercise more, and that is something that was very important to me personally. I then set myself a challenge, as an example, Vienna has various towers, and I wanted to climb these towers simply because I know how difficult it is to get to the second floor when you have COPD.”
According to the lung specialists looking after him, “Mr. Jordan has really achieved something great here, in that it was only through consistent drug therapy, valve therapy, and, above all, very consistent training.” – further elaborate Prof. Valipour and Dr. Petrovic.

What is the Zephyr Valve procedure?
The Zephyr Valve is a minimally invasive treatment option that is not another medication and does not require cutting or incisions. Tiny valves are placed into a targeted section of the diseased lung where air has become trapped. The trapped air causes shortness of breath. The one-way valve allows the trapped air to escape, resulting in patients being able to breathe easier and experience less shortness of breath.1
If you have severe COPD/emphysema, this option may be right for you.

Important Safety Information: The Pulmonx Zephyr® Endobronchial Valves are implantable bronchial valves indicated for the bronchoscopic treatment of adult patients with hyperinflation associated with severe emphysema in regions of the lung that have little to no collateral ventilation. Complications can include but are not limited to pneumothorax (tear in the lung), worsening of COPD symptoms, hemoptysis, pneumonia, and, in rare cases, death. The Zephyr Valve is contraindicated in patients who have not quit smoking. Please talk with your physician about other contraindications, warnings, precautions, and adverse events. Only a trained physician can decide whether a particular patient is an appropriate candidate for treatment with the Zephyr Valve.
